In 1981 motorists were treated to a truly spectacular site as the Legendary Kanana made a rather unusual journey by land from Essendon Airport to her new home at Tullamarine to begin what would be the first of many restoration programs. With her wings removed, Kanana made the hour-long journey down the Tullamarine Freeway flanked by a small army of Ansett, Police, State Electricity Commission (SEC), Telecom and Country Roads Board officials.
Towed along behind a tractor driven by an Ansett plant and equipment foreman. An SEC “cherry picker” lifted low-hanging power lines to let the grand old lady of the air reach her new destination unscathed. Today, Kanana enjoys a much simpler life having been fully restored and now residing at Melbourne Jet Base.
